So many people just say offhandedly that Valentine’s Day is really just another ordinary Thursday in Mordor. Just like Tollgate bridge is just a ordinary bridge with arches.
But I know someone who once rode a motorbike over one of those arches. I also know someone who walked up one of the arches to the top. In the middle of the night. And then she sat down next to someone who had walked up the arch ahead of her.
And with their legs dangling over the edge, they played the guitar and sang songs. Maybe with lovely folky lyrics about how true love is basically like taking heroin. Or sitting precariously above a super busy city highway. Courage and bliss and beauty and freedom for just a little tiny bit, before you fall off. Or the police come and tell you to get down. Or, even worse, put you in jail. That it is how it usually ends up.
But at least an ordinary bridge can inspire a good short story and both people lived to tell the tale. So here is a picture I took on Thursday to celebrate these glorious moments of reckless stupidity usually only brought about by showing off on a motor bike or the folly of true love. Happy Valentine’s Day.
